1985-1990

Группа, известная в будущем как Dream Theater, была сформирована в 1985 году гитаристом Джоном Петруччи, басистом Джоном Маянгом и барабанщиком Майком Портным во время их учебы в музыкальном колледже Беркли в городе Бостон. Для игры на клавишах был приглашен Кевин Мур, игравший в одной группе с Джоном Петруччи в средней школе. На вокал был поставлен Крис Коллинз.

Квинтет принял имя Majesty (имя было придумано Майком Портным как описание финальной части песни «Bastile Day» группы Rush).
